Marcy Open School National Junior Honor Society
Rules for Membership
The Marcy Open chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) promotes the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. We are affiliated with the National Honor Society, a national organization for students in middle school and high school.
Academics:
Students in grades 7 & 8 who attain a quarterly Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher will be invited to join the NJHS.
Once a student has joined the NJHS she or he is expected to maintain a GPA each quarter of 3.5 or above. If a student member’s GPA falls below a 3.5, they will be placed on probation for 1 quarter. At the end of that quarter if the GPA remains below a 3.5, the student will be removed from the NJHS.
Service:
NJHS members will be expected to volunteer for 5 hours during each semester.
A log of volunteer hours, signed by a supervising adult, will be turned into the NJHS advisor by the end of each semester.
Volunteer hours may be served in or out of school, as long as an adult supervisor has signed the log.
If a student is having difficulty performing the required volunteer hours, he or she should speak with the advisor for the NJHS. Service hours are available at Marcy, and the advisor can help a student find those opportunities.
If a student fails to do 5 hours of service in a semester, he or she will be placed on probation for the following semester. Failure to do the required service hours over the course of 2 semesters will result in removal from the NJHS.
Conduct:
Members of the NJHS are leaders within the Marcy Open community. They are expected to behave in a way that demonstrates character and citizenship. As such, we expect them to be respectful to staff and fellow students at all times.
Students are required to attend NJHS meetings. If a student misses 2 consecutive meetings they may be removed from the National Junior Honor Society. If a student knows they will need to miss a meeting or if a student was absent on a meeting day, she or he should speak with the advisor.
If a student is suspended from school, he or she will automatically be removed from the National Junior Honor Society.
For behavioral issues other than suspension, the advisor will give the student and parents a warning. If the behavioral issues continue, the student may be removed from the National Junior Honor Society.
